Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence in her lifetime. In the developing world, 1 in 7 girls is married before her 15th birthday. And between 1998 and 2008 alone, sexual violence against men was noted in reports on 25 conflict-affected countries.
Gender-based violence threatens lives, halts progress, and undermines societies. It is a global phenomenon preventing people, especially women and girls, of their right to a life free from violence.
If women are not healthy and safe, they cannot care for themselves, support their families, or contribute to their communities. From kidnappings to shootings, from acid attacks to poisoning, and from discrimination to intimidation, women and girls around the world are being threatened, harassed, attacked and killed. It has to stop.
H4BF creates Women and Girls Friendly Spaces (WGFS). The need for mental health support, a safe space, case management, and access to social workers is deeply urgent. Without H4BF's WGFS, the situation for vulnerable women and girls will rapidly deteriorate.
We provide the only access to physical respite, legal counsel, and psychosocial treatment for abused girls in Cameroon. In addition, we provide education & abuse prevention training to girls at the shelter. Currently, 30 staff members provide care for our girls. Our operational costs are high and we are reliant on outside funding. We aim to grow our day-to-day operations and also decrease our reliance on outside support by making the shelter as self-sustainable as possible.
we will encourage the women to speak up about what is happening to them, breaking the cultural belief to keep silent. By educating the public about abuse laws, we will begin to shift the cultural mentality to keep silent. Those who are abused see the shelters as safe havens not only for their security and protection, but also as a source of empowerment for them in the face of fighting for their rights.
Working with the local community we can provide the environment and tools to enable local women to learn and unlock their potential to start their own business locally and to provide their family with a stable and regular income. Providing one to one support locally we will work with individuals to unlock their ideas and make them a reality.
